RECOMMENDATIONS FOR BREASTFEEDING MOTHERS

  1. Breast fed your baby immediately after birth if possible.  The newborn is very alert right after delivery, followed by a period of sleep.
  2. Work on the technique of latching on correctly in the hospital with the lactation specialist.
  3. Drink plenty of water – at least 64 ounces.  Every time you sit down to nurse drink a glass of water.

  4. Eat a variety of foods plus nutritious snacks between meals.
  5. Continue taking your daily prenatal vitamin while nursing.
  6. Limit your caffeine intake to two beverages or less a day.
  7. Before taking any over the counter medication, consult your pediatrician.
  8. Avoid smoking while nursing.
